Notting Hill Gate Station

Welcome to Notting Hill Gate Station in 1868.

The Metropolitan Railway Company raised one million pounds in capital to build the world’s first underground railway. It would allow working people to move out of the congested centre of London and travel into the city from the healthier suburbs.

Already a success, with more than 40.000 passengers on its first day, the line was

extended from Paddington round to South Kensington via Notting Hill Gate. The Metropolitan Line Station at Notting Hill Gate was unveiled to the public in 1868.

Between Pembridge Road and Pembridge Gardens, the horse-drawn bus, advertising Neslté’s Milk, passes passengers outside the station.
Today, the Circle, District and Central lines are all served by the station below ground.

To find Portobello market, you take the exit on the right out of the station and climb steps up to this point, before turning right into Pembridge Road
and on towards Portobello.
